Facebook, Twitter, Blogging, Linked In, Tagged, Meet Up, Pinterest, Instagram, Youtube, Google+…….this is just everyday lingo for most people now days….But for a guy over 50 years old like myself, this stuff is hard to keep up with. You know this, right?!
My younger clients certainly are sensitive enough to know this, as often they will ask me, in mid-stream of telling their story, “So I was on Facebook…..you know what Facebook is, don’t you Dr. Coleman?…… I nod and they continue with their story….”well I was on face book and…..”. I continue to listen, but am secretly relieved that a simple nod was sufficient to satisfy my client’s curiosity about my understanding of anything related to the social media.
It’s so hard to keep up with it all. Just the other day I was talking with one of my friends who attended a presentation about social media and its impact on pre-adolescents, and the speaker ask a panel of 12 year olds if they ever go on Facebook…and the unanimous response was, “We never go on Facebook. That’s for old people”. Great! Since I don’t even have a Facebook page, now I’m so far behind that I am left trying to catch up with the “old people”!
So this is why I decided to blog. I’ve never blogged before, but figured if I’m ever going to try to catch up with everybody else, I’m going to have to start somewhere. So why not start with blogging. It is my understanding that a lot of people are doing it. And not only are they blogging, but a lot of people are following these “bloggers” on the web, reading their every word. Apparently these bloggers have some very interesting and important things to say….so interesting, as a matter of fact, that they even have “followers”!! Well I’m going to warn you right from the get go. I’m not so sure you are going to want to follow me if you are looking to follow someone with a very clear direction as to what he is doing and where he is going with a blog. As a matter of fact, I feel a little like Forest Gump (yea it’s an old movie! I told you I was over 50, right?!) when he started running across the country and a whole slew of people started following him because they thought he was running for some noble cause. Only to hear him say when asked why he was running….”I don’t know. I just felt like running”.
Well I’m going to start blogging……why?………I don’t know…. I guess I just feel like blogging. And what will I blog about? I don’t know that yet either. Maybe it will be like Mr. Gump’s box of chocolates…….tune in and see…….”cause you just never know what you are going to get”!
