Activity Center

“You can learn more about a child in one hour of play than you can in one year of conversation.”
- Plato

Activity Center

At Waterford we have created a special activity area where your child or teen can participate in some kind of fun activity. Some choose to play ping-pong, air hockey, throw a ball, participate in a board game or just sit and relax with their therapist on a beanbag in a comfortable setting. You may wonder, “Why is my child participating in these non-talk activities?”

Therapy activities are used by clinicians to engage clients as an essential component of a successful treatment outcome. To engage clients in therapy, clinicians must work to build a deep connection and a therapeutic alliance.

When clients feel more engaged in therapy, they will more likely bond with their therapist, collaborate on treatment goals, and participate in treatment. They will also be more likely to remain in treatment and have greater treatment satisfaction. Using interactive therapy activities is one way counselors can engage and motivate clients during sessions.

Therapeutic activities:

  • Build rapport between clients and therapists in a less intimidating way
  • Encourage conversation between the client and therapist
  • Gives the space for the therapeutic relationship to develop and grow
  • Breaks down barriers of resistance and encourages bonding and self-disclosure
  • Motivate clients to be more engage and to work harder in the therapy session
